Future 360, Wii, PS3 Emulator for PC?

With E3 boiling the latest and greatest tech demos and release dates, there has also been something else to brew with total surprise and absolutely no showcase at all: only rumors… Rumors of a PC emulator capable of processing Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and the Wii.

By now most of you have heard about the recent Intellisponse leak. The latest in the continuing series of speculations is a mysterious something known as Trioxide. First breached over on Kotaku, Trioxide is apparently a system of some sort designed to give PC players the ability to play (emulate?) the “latest console games” on their home computers.

The name Trioxide might imply that the system’s capabilities could theoretically encompass the current-gen trinity of Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Besides the initial mission statement referenced above, there doesn’t seem to be anything in the way of technical specs or clarification leaking out, apart from a mysterious dual price point of $49 and $299. The prices seem to suggest two SKUs for Trioxide — perhaps one sold as just software with more limited capabilities and one with controllers and hardware included for a more complete experience. This is, of course, totally speculation for the time being.

Assuming such a program/piece of hardware/whatever-it-is does exist, would it even be legal to sell? How long would it take the big three to permanently shut it down? Given the marketing research website source, Trioxide could simply be a marketer’s wishlist for the next Bleem. On the other hand, if Trioxide is real and somehow survives the probable legal onslaught awaiting, it could shake the worlds of console and PC gaming.
